The museum

The Museum of Arts and Crafts of Pianoro stands on the edge of the town, in a foothill position, between the Genepreto park, the municipal swimming pool area and the Bocciofila park, in an area where once there were some farms and their farmhouses. In a stable / barn of the late 1800s, material documents of the past peasant and artisan civilization of the valleys of the Savena, Setta and Idice are preserved and exhibited, over 1800 of which donated by the Pianorese collector Pietro Lazzarini.

The restoration of the building has restored the central body to its original state, the stable with 10 vaulted ceilings and brick flooring and the accessory surfaces and the barn above it adapted to the exhibition spaces. The setting, organized by historical reconstruction of environments and by type of objects, offers a reading aimed at transmitting the traditions, ways of life and the language of the community. The exhibition itinerary, structured according to three thematic strands, "the rural house", "craft activities" and "agricultural works", each divided into various sections, focuses on the work activities of women and men.

In the spaces of the peasant house, the tools, furnishings and furnishings refer to the multiplicity of female work, to the woman, to her role within the patriarchal family.

The woman is busy at the furnasèli, she makes the straw braid, typical activity of the Savena valley, weaves the hemp thread, spins the wool, embroider the trousseau, works the milk to make cheese and ricotta and, not only, helps the man in the cellar, in the stable, in the fields.

In the post offices the artisan shops (shoemaker, barber, tailor, hatter, mattress maker, knitter, blacksmith, carpenter) and the myriad of seasonal activities such as the pork butcher, the chairman, the basket maker, the knife grinder, the rope maker. The sector dedicated to weights and measures is particularly interesting due to the presence of the ancient measures for cereals in use before the adoption of the metric decimal system, such as quartaróla and stèr. Tools and machines for working in the fields (cultivation of wheat, corn, vines, potatoes and hay) and for working in the woods of cutters, sawyers, mulai are displayed under a large glass roof.

Here and there the signs of devotion and ancient beliefs refer to a world whose boundaries between the sacred and the profane are still not well defined. In the garden that surrounds the Museum, agricultural vehicles and machines for working the soil, sowing and harvesting, with animal or mechanical traction, testify to the progress and innovations made by man, even if hoe and sickle, very ancient tools, are still indispensable. Museum logoGantographs, information panels, multimedia stations, to consult the photographic inventory with the nomenclature in dialect and Italian, complete the museum exhibition. Upstairs, the classroom, with library and computer, is available to visiting school groups and the large room for projections, conferences, seminars, hosts visual arts exhibitions.

The logo of the Museum of Arts and Crafts is a rocker, this choice to underline that there is almost no sector of human life in which the measurement and weighing procedures do not play a decisive role.
